High number of home-schooled students leads to state audit PDF Print E-mail

In an attempt to ensure that public school districts aren’t disguising high school dropouts, the Texas Education Agency is conducting an audit of students who withdrew under the auspice of home schooling.

TEA officials wouldn’t reveal details of the audit — other than to say that the state is contacting a random sampling of families to validate that they intended to home-school when they left middle or high school.

More than 22,620 Texas secondary students were listed as withdrawing to home-school in 2008 — raising a red flag among some experts and educators who worry that Texas’ lax regulations are encouraging abuse in the hands-off home-schooling category. The 2008 figures reflect a 24 percent jump from the prior year and roughly triple the number of high school home-schooling withdrawals from a decade ago.

“They looked at the numbers and data a little more closely and decided to go a little more in-depth,” TEA spokeswoman DeEtta Culbertson said.

An Iowa school district suspended Matthias Beattie, 6, for a week after he brought a live shotgun shell to a class he takes once a week through a Des Moines school program which pairs home-schooled students with public school teachers, USA Today reports.

According to story, which originally appeared in The Des Moines Register, the boy's parents say the discipline action "lacks common sense" and that the school did not make "clear that the policy applies to home-schooled children."

Matthias's mother, Charlene Beattie, tells the newspaper that "Matthias is a little kid from the farm, and he did not have intent to do any harm."

OTTAWA, Ontario, March 23, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A German homeschooling family is seeking asylum in Canada after fleeing their native country due to persecution, reports the Globe and Mail.

The family will make their plea on Tuesday in a closed hearing before the Alberta Immigration and Refugee board.  They say that they would be persecuted in Germany for homeschooling, based on the German law that forbids homeschooling with little exception.  Parents who violate the law have faced hefty fines, as well as imprisonment and state seizure of their children.
